The Mom called during her lunch break to "ask" me to expand my search by several criteria to find the best deal.  Turns out we might skip Canada after all, in the interest of saving money.  So now it's:

Hometown airport, FL --> Vancouver, BC

AND
FL --> Beijing
FL --> Hong Kong
FL --> NY --> Hong Kong
FL --> NY --> Beijing
